Now this is what you call a castle on the hill – wow!
Fall in love watching the sunset from Wawel
stunning views
Located high on a hill overlooking the Vistula river in Kraków, Wawel Royal Castle and Cathedral complex is just stunning – and it gives you the best views in town. It was the centre of Poland’s culture and politics until the 16th century, built on the orders of King Casimir III the Great. It consists of a number of structures situated around the huge Italian-styled main courtyard. From the outside you’re utterly intrigued. Once you walk up and enter the courtyard you are simply amazed. I defy you not so say Wow.
There’s plenty to see and do inside the castle, but for me it was simply wondering around the grounds and taking in the atmosphere that made this castle steal my heart. And did I mention the awesome sunset views across the river? Seriously stunning. Oh and great coffee too!
architectural heaven
Serving as a royal residence and the site where the country’s rulers governed Poland for five centuries (1038-1596), Wawel Castle is seen as a symbol of the independent Polish state. Today it contains a priceless collection of 16th-century Flemish tapestries, considered to be one of the largest in the world. There are a host of other treasures and exhibits to enjoy also.
For me, it is the buildings and the grounds that impress the most though. I can certainly see why Wawel was designated a World Heritage Site in 1978. It truly is a marvel. If you love architecture you’re really gonna love this as you get several styles in one: Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Oh and did I mention the views? You’ll love them.
